Carpenters & Millwrights

November Holidays

• Veterans' Day - Wednesday, November 11
Veterans Day is a holiday for the General Construction Trades. For the provisions, Active Members may access Bulletin 70-15 in the members-only section at accnj.org.

• Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 26
Thanksgiving Day is a holiday for the General Construction Trades. For the provisions, Active Members may access Bulletin 82-15 in the members-only section at accnj.org.

• General Election Day, November 3, is not a holiday for the General Construction Trades.

Government Affairs

Congress Passes Federal Highway Spending Patch

In Bulletin 83-15, we reported the US Senate approved a measure on October 28 that extends federal transportation spending for three weeks, setting a November 20 deadline for both houses to advance a more comprehensive multi-year funding bill. NJDOT Commissioner Jamie Fox Resigns

In Bulletin 71-15, we told you that Gov. Christie announced on October 2 the resignation of Jamie Fox. In Bulletin 86-15, we reported that Richard T. Hammer, who had been Assistant Commissioner for NJDOT, has been nominated to head the agency and will serve as Acting Commissioner until the Senate holds a confirmation vote. For complete details, access the bulletin in the members-only section at accnj.org.

Education & Workforce Development

Summer Internship Program

In Bulletin 72-15, we announced once again we will be working within the CIAP structure to offer a summer internship program to all Active Members. The program will be available to heavy, highway, utility and building contractors. Approximately 70 student applicants will be selected before the end of the year and invited to participate in a mandatory Job Fair scheduled for January 6, 2016, at the Pines Manor, Edison. Safety

OSHA's Confined Space in Construction Standard 

Enforcement of OSHA's Confined Space in Construction Standard (29CFR 1926.1207) went into effect October 2. ACCNJ members were offered two programs during the month for more information on the new standard. 

• On October 16, ACCNJ hosted Michael Corbett, OSHA Compliance Assistance Specialist for Region II, for a Coffee Talk on the new rules and responsibilities for contractors.

• On October 29, the Laborers' Health and Safety Fund of North America aired a webinar reviewing the differences between the new construction rule and the general industry rule.

ACCNJ Hosts OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Course

In Bulletin 69-15, we invited members to send employees to our next ACCNJ-hosted OSHA 30-Hour course, which will span four consecutive Tuesdays - November 3, 10, 17 & 24. The course covers OSHA policies, procedures and standards as well as construction safety and health principles. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive an OSHA Construction Safety and Health 30-Hour course completion card. OSHA Issues Updated Trenching and Excavation Safety Guide

In October, OSHA issued an updated guide for trenching and excavation, among the most hazardous operations in construction. Access the guide, a 28-page downloadable PDF, by clicking on the ACCNJ Monthly Updates icon on the home page at accnj.org.

AGC Recommends 13 Steps for Workplace Safety

Construction Safety Course Schedules

In Bulletin 74-15, we distributed the October 2015 schedule of safety classes available through the training centers affiliated with the general construction trades. Presentation Available on ACCNJ's Affordable Care Act Program 

On October 8, ACCNJ hosted a program in which representatives from ACCNJ member Susanin, Widman & Brennan provided an update on the "Affordable Care Act's Employer Shared Responsibility Reporting for Applicable Large Employers Contributing to Multiemployer Welfare Plans." Coffee Talk - November 18

ACCNJ members are invited to attend the next program in our Coffee Talk series on November 18. NJ SDA CEO Charles McKenna visits us again, now having led SDA for nearly two years, to review the current capital portfolio and emergent projects. ACCNJ Membership Meeting - December 8 

We invite all members to join us for ACCNJ's Annual Membership Meeting on Tuesday, December 8, at Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth. The evening begins with a cocktail hour at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner and our program at 6:30 pm. We will recognize our outgoing Chair, Mark Hall, for his dedication and commitment to ACCNJ, especially during the merger. Also, back by popular demand is the basket raffle to support the ACCNJ Scholarship Foundation. Carpenters Apprentice Graduation

ACCNJ staff and members were pleased to attend the Apprentice Graduation Commencement Exercises of the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters and the New Jersey Carpenters Apprentice Training and Educational Fund on October 15 at the Clubhouse at Galloping Hill in Kenilworth. More than 50 apprentices representing six locals graduated. 

Enterprise Fleet Management Seminar - November 4

With more than 55 years of experience and a fleet of 1.6 million vehicles, ACCNJ member Enterprise Fleet Management shares knowledge and insight on managing and controlling fleet expenses at a Front Row Information Seminar on Wednesday, November 4 at the Association office.
