Sisters in the Brotherhood Open House

With more than 40 people attending, the Sisters in the Brotherhood Open House on May 6 was a huge success. The Open House was designed to expose community- and faith-based leaders and state agency representatives to the career opportunities for women who join the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, as well as understand the support group available to them. Going forward, the Sisters group plans additional meetings with attendees to explore partnership opportunities to help increase the number of women in the Carpenters Union.

Two-Month Patch for Federal Transportation Funding

As we told you in Bulletin 47-15, the US Senate passed a two-month spending plan extension for federal transportation projects over the Memorial Day weekend, the same plan passed by the House earlier last week. The vote sends the measure to President Obama for signature into law before the current transportation spending authority expires on May 31. For complete details, access the bulletin in the members-only section at accnj.org.

ACCNJ Submits Comments on Proposed Diving Regulations

As you may know, the US Coast Guard has proposed amendments to regulations for commercial diving operations. The changes potentially impact construction activities conducted at ports, active in-shore projects, deep-water port safety zones and planned dives from vessels that are required to have a Coast Guard certificate of inspection. ACCNJ recognized the importance of raising industry standards but our formal submitted comments cautioned against the additional personnel requirement, the potential jurisdictional conflict with OSHA and the burdensome costs the proposed regulations would entail. Prior to submittal, we worked in conjunction with our members and labor partners to gain multiple perspectives on the probable impact of the regulations.

Safety

OSHA Issues Final Rule on Confined Spaces

In Bulletin 45-15, we distributed the news of OSHA's release of its final rule to increase protections for construction workers in confined spaces, which include manholes, crawl spaces, tanks and others. The new rule, 29 CFR Part 1926 OSHA Subpart AA - Confined Space, will become effective August 3, 2015. For details and a link to the OSHA webpage, access the bulletin in the members-only section at accnj.org.

New OSHA Job Safety & Health Poster

In Bulletin 46-15, we told members of the new OSHA "Job Safety and Health - It's the Law!" poster informing workers of their right to request an OSHA inspection of their workplaces, receive information and training on job hazards, report a work-related injury or illness, and raise safety and health concerns with their employer or OSHA without fear of retaliation. The poster also informs employers of their legal obligations. For details and a link to download the poster, access the bulletin in the members-only section at accnj.org.

FINAL REMINDER:  Highway Work Zone Safety Training

As you read in Bulletin 31-15, ACCNJ submitted an RFP to AGC of America to serve as a host site for the Susan Harwood Training Grant offering a Work Zone Safety Training Program. We are excited to have been selected as one of eight locations around the country. The one-day training program based on OSHA standards and best practices will be held at the Association offices in Edison at no cost. Participants may select one of two dates:  June 15 or June 16, 2015. For the registration form and more program details, access the bulletin in the members-only section at accnj.org.

OSHA Revises Heat Safety App

OSHA's heat safety app is available in English and Spanish for iOS and Android phones, and is now updated for iPhones, with full-screen color alerts for all heat conditions, improved navigation and accessibility options, and compatibility upgrades. The heat app pulls local weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide current conditions, including the daily maximum heat index so employers may help prepare workers for extreme heat and plan work schedules accordingly. OSHA's heat safety app is open source, allowing app developers to access the code and contribute to it or improve it. To download the app and code, visit https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/heatillness/heat_index/heat_app.html.
